Used, Refurbished or 2nd Hand IT Hardware Equipment

Jason S.: What are the benefits to buying 2nd hand / used or refurbished IT network hardware?
Clyde A. Lettsome, PhD, PE, MEM Answer: Anonymous if you have the ability to inspect second hand/used or refurbished hardware IT equipment prior to purchase, the benefits of them in most cases outweigh disadvantages. Today’s technology is extremely reliable, especially devices with no movable parts. Because of this, a device can function for a number of years after the next versions are brought to market.

It is true you will not have cutting edge technology but in most cases you do not need it. In business, it is not important to have the latest and greatest. It is more important to have what is adequate. Keeping this in mind in most cases you will benefit in the following ways:

  • Purchase Cost – buying used usually cost less than buying the new equipment
  • Depreciation – IT equipment does not depreciate linearly (example:$50/yr) . Instead because of the evolution of technology the value of equipment is cut in half approximately every 18-24 months. Thus, by buying used you avoid the huge upfront depreciation.
  • Energy Cost – In some cases, older items (example: some servers) use less energy than newer equipment. Therefore buying an older item that can handle your IT needs could save you money.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck!
