Starting A Web Design Business

Lisa S.: How does one get into the web designing business? To be more specific, what should I study or what is the best software to use?

Answer: I would suggest you focus on what the average person cannot do if you want to make it in the website design business. Today the average person can buy a web template, install a content management system (CMS) like WordPress and have a website up and running in a few hours. However, the average person is not capable of adding “bells and whistles” to their website and they need an expert designer to do that. You want to be that expert.

I suggest that you learn html first. Then move to learning a scripting language(s) like PHP, java script, and learn how to design MySQL and/or MS SQL database before you start using website designing software like Dreamweaver. Once you have gotten a feel for the languages, the databases and website designing software, I would then suggest familiarize yourself with a CMS like WordPress.

Of course this is not all there is to designing websites. This is my suggested starting point. This means you have to continue reading and building on your knowledge as well as trying to keep up with the rapid changes in this industry.

Good Luck!
